Reduce the costs of workplace injuries!

Let's Talk About Stress!

Stress is any physical, social, economic or other factor that requires change.

     Stress may be good:
  • exercise induced changes
  • meeting challenges
  • personal goals
  • striving to meet goals

     Stress may be bad;
  • job stress
  • family problems
  • financial difficulties
  • worrying about future.

Here are some suggestions to help you reduce your stress:

  1. Identify what stresses you: first, you must identify the sources of stress in your daily life. Use the Personal Concerns Inventory to help
  2. Change how you respond: once stressors are identified, begin modifying the way in which you manage stress. For example,
if traffic causes you stress, take a different way to work, leave a few minutes earlier and go for a short walk when you arrive,
or change the radio station to a more relaxing form of music.
  3. Practice daily relaxation: find a quiet corner in your house or office, loosen your clothes and lie down in a comfortable position. Think of something relaxing. Breathe in slowly and exhale completely. You might find some relaxing music to be helpful. Dedicate 15 minutes each day for relaxation therapy.
  4. Massage: massage therapy is often an effective remedy for daily stress.
  5. Yoga: yoga is one of the most effective activities to reduce stress.
  6. Breathing exercises: breathing or relaxation exercises are increasingly popular as remedies for stress. Like meditation, these exercises are meant to give your mind and body a quick timeout. Whenever you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed by daily events, stop and inhale deeply through your nose, then exhale slowly through your mouth to the count of 8. Practice this regularly throughout the day and you'll find yourself better able to diffuse your stressful moments.
  7. Aerobic exercise: physical activity is a great stress buster, plus you'll be amazed by how much better you'll look and feel.
  8. Hobbies: find a hobby that you can become absorbed in. Take a few minutes each day for your hobby. This will help take your mind off your stress triggers.
  9. Develop a support network: when stress becomes a problem, spending time with loved ones, meeting with friends or even caring for your pet may help.
